- George Mikan was the
- NBAΓÇÖs first star and its first
- big player. At 6' 10" and
- 245 pounds, he might not
- seem that big by todayΓÇÖs
- standards. But in the 1940ΓÇÖs and 1950ΓÇÖs, the
- average player was much smaller. In fact,
- many observers thought that very tall people
- were too clumsy to play basketball. George
- helped change that view.
-
- George wasnΓÇÖt a natural athlete. As a high
- school player in Joliet, Illinois, he was cut
- from his school team. When he entered
- DePaul University, he found a coach who
- helped him develop his basketball skills.
- George went on to become a three-time
- All-America! As a junior and senior, he
- was College Player of the Year.
